About

The Outstanding Chicana/Latina Poderosas Mural Project recognizes 9 Xicana/Latina Poderosas, or “powerful women,” who have engaged in social justice and advocacy in the Sacramento Valley region.

The goal is to tell their stories, how they empowered the Latina/o/x communities and how they secured transformative, equitable, and accessible justice for all.

When young people ask “Am I good enough? Am I smart enough? Can I do this?” the women highlighted in this mural will inspire them to affirmatively answer, “YES”.

Mission

Our mission is to use art as activism in the service of building a more knowledgeable and equitable society. As scholars, community activists, artists, culture bearers, students, and educators, we are dedicated to preserving imperiled Xicanx/Latinx herstories/histories and highlighting culturally responsive, gender inclusive narratives. We use community space, workshops, art, and storytelling as a way to construct compelling positive images that are critical for our Xicanx/Latinx collective identities, cultural affirmation, pride, and hope. Our work is centered on changing the narrative and increasing advocacy for our communities and poignantly expressing our contemporary civil rights, whether it be farmworker rights, immigrant rights, missing Indigenous women, trans and LGBTQ2S+ rights, housing rights, and educational equity.

We have learned through our work that there must be a thoughtful shift of emphasis on our educational outreach practices to encompass, not just greater accessibility, but also a focus on being informed by people with a wide range of disability types and working directly with artists with disabilities.
